What We Do
As a sea gardener, I grow kelp on lines in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island in the winter season. Planting occurs in October/November and harvest is typically over a few days in April/May. I will partner with local fishermen to harvest, offering a chance for them to learn about sea gardening. I grow my kelp with loving intention, with hope for a brighter future for all. My kids may join the winter kelp checks and we marvel at the peace and stillness of east coast winters.
Once harvested, our amber waves of kelp will take 2 paths:
To market - Fresh, dried, ground, or frozen. Used to create bioplastics, distributed locally & regionally to food markets, to friends and community interested in trying kelp in their businesses (see Local Innovators for more info), for garden compost, product testing, spa wraps, and more.
Removing carbon – Working with local fishemen and land-based facilities, I plan to harvest and then sink or bury a portion of my sponsored kelp. Carbon captured by the kelp is sequestered (locked) into the ocean bottom or soil, preventing it from being released back into the atmosphere and contributing to climate change. Based on annual goals, I aim to “sell” a portion of my kelp at a fair market value to individuals, companies, and organizations interested in offsetting their carbon footprint.

OFFSET YOUR CARBON….By sponsoring our farm, you are …
Offsetting your Carbon footprint (how much, how can they tell; Work with Budget out Planet or TNC to incorporate kelp carbon calculator)
By sponsoring, you will join our Kelp Superhero’s Club” and receive rewards for different level sponsors (On the SquareSpace template is has “Make a Donation”. Can we change this to “Offset Your Carbon”?)
Here is how… (I can create the step-by step soon and we can add it to the website)
